Anatomy Of An Envelope
Each part of an envelope has a name. Learning them will make it easy for you to specify envelopes accurately, prevent confusion and avoid expensive mistakes.

- Seal-gum: the adhesive that affixes the flap to the back of the envelope to close it. Typically remoistenable or latex.
- Top flap: the flap at the top of an envelope that has an adhesive to close the envelope.
- Throat: the space between the flap and back of the envelope – specifications can affect inserting.
- Back or bottom flap: the part of the finished envelope to which the seal flap affixes to close the envelope.
- Side flap: the closures to the right and left of the envelope which form the envelope shape.
